This Week’s Prompt: Covid Lockdown
It's 2020 and everyone is on lockdown for Covid. Bored and lonely, Claire schedules a zoom with her old crew.
Where is everyone? What are they doing? What have they been doing? How are they staying busy during quarantine?
Your mission: Write a 500-word-or-less scene capturing the PC’s Zoom Call.
Guidelines for Your Scene:
Choose your POV character (Massie, Claire, Alicia, Dylan, or Kristen)
Set the scene (Massie’s London Flat, Dylan’s Hamptons House, Kuh-laire’s apartment)
Include at least one callback to their OCD days (inside jokes, old rivalries, shared memories)
Some Inspiration to Get You Started:
Has Massie created a timed at-home scavenger hunt?
Does Kuh-laire have to kick Todd out of her room at her parents house, since he keeps trying to interrupt the Zoom?
Is Kristen addicted to her Peloton?
Is Dylan in lock down with her Mother (who’s driving her insane)?
Is Alicia swiping on dating apps and breaking the rules of Quarantine?

Title: The new Friday night sleepover
Massie has gathered the clique to meet over Zoom, partly to gossip, but truth be told, she misses her friends. Not to mention the constant dreary weather in London has put Massie in a bit of a sour state. From her velvet chaise lounge in a deep Queen Elizabeth purple. The first girl to pick up is Alicia, with her luscious chocolate brown hair and bouncy voice. "Hey Mass, how are things on the other side of the pond? Fabulous, I bet." Massie answers matching Alica's cheeriness by half, "Things are Ah-doreable, I have an absolutely HAWT boyfriend Jameson Kenworth, Darrington would just be seething, He's perfect. Of course, soon Cecelie Thomas picks up. She comes into view, smooth cafe colored skin, midnight locs, and sharp wit. Of course, she's immediately gushing as Alicia catches her up on the gossip. As she tells her about her luscious boyfriend, a backup dancer named Dalton with loose black curly hair and Hispanic. Cece spills about her house in St. Lucie, job in the fashion archives, and of course, a boy named James Rosen. He’s strong coffee, sugar, and effort with soft blond curly hair and a $ 5,000 black Amex
POV: Claire
Location:
Massie: Doing her make-up and hair at her vanity table
Alicia: In her walk-in closet trying on comfy clothes from Aritzia
Dylan: In the kitchen deliberating whether she still has to diet if no one will see her
Kristen: On her Peloton
Claire: In her new arts & craft studio corner at home
Title: Always Alphas
Claire looked at her toy yarn creation with pride and thought about how she’d like to make one for each of her friends, although she wasn’t sure anyone would really appreciate them except for Layne. Setting her crocheting tools aside and closing the YouTube tutorial tab, she logged into Zoom and got ready for her call with the Pretty Committee. Massie was the first one on.
“Hullo!” she smiled.
Claire waved hello as she took a zip of her Throat Coat tea, and Kristen and Alicia were the next to show up. As they waited for Dylan to join the call, Claire could see that Kristen was in a sports tank on her Peloton, and Alicia seemed to have her laptop on a clothing shelf on top of some clothes, because she was showing up tilted in her closet. Moments later, Dylan appeared on the screen. Was that chocolate syrup by her lip?
“Sephora haul!” Massie began, shaking a box full of makeup and skincare, ready to show her friends what was in, as she shook her curls and showed off the hair she’d styled with the best hair tool and products.
“Aritzia haul!” Alicia gleefully exclaimed. “No one needs makeup right now, Massie. I just got the BEST new sweatpants and hoody!”
Massie was about to say that everything in Aritzia was great and that no one needed her advice but stopped in her tracks when she saw…
“Dylan!” Massie frowned, “What are you doing?!”
Dylan was bringing a spoon of ice-cream to her mouth. Massie wasn’t disappointed because the ice cream could make Dylan gain weight, but because it was only Wednesday, and Dylan had said she would only have treats on Fridays. Massie wanted her friend to believe in herself and accomplish her goals.
“Enjoy it, sister,” Kristen panted, sweating puddles on her biking machine, “Just get a Peloton and burn off the calories later, it’s great!”
“Do you still need to workout so much Kris, now that you’re done with college and playing soccer for their team?” Claire asked.
After high school, each of the PC girls became Alphas wherever they went, and Kristen was a total Alpha at college, being great at both sports and academics.
“We’ll always be Alphas,” Massie said, “And we will keep being Alphas, even in the pandemic. So we’ll keep doing our make-up, Leesh, and eating healthy, Dyl, and taking care of our bodies and health like Kristen and Claire. Be ready for my plan about how we’ll dominate the online scene during the pandemic —“
“Until next time, xoxo, gossip gi-“
“and no terminal Netflix-binging, KUH-LAIRE!”
