Let’s do book two!
Hello GLU’s! Welcome back to the Clique Book Club! This week, we’re cracking the spine on Best Friends for Never.
Best Friends for Never begins with a dinner at the Block Estate with the Lyons family. Todd, Kuh-laire’s younger brother, soaks Massie’s suede skirt with grape juice. As a result, Massie sass-attacks Todd, Claire, and even their parents. Claire takes this opportunity to call out Massie’s fashion addiction. To prove that Claire is being ridiculous, Massie agrees to a bet.
After dinner, Massie overhears all four parents discussing the never-ending tension between Massie and Claire. They are clearly concerned, and you know what that means? They can be manipulated!
Claire wants a cell phone, and Massie wants a boy/girl Halloween Party. If they play nice and pretend to be friends, their happy parents will give them whatever they want.
Does Massie really want peace with Claire somewhere deep down? Is this her twisted, pride-or-die way of becoming friends with her?
Claire has confided in Layne and expressed her interest in boys for the first time. If she agrees to this deal, she could get a cell phone, a friendship with Massie down the line, and a Briarwood crush out of it. What do you think she wants most? Why?
How do you think Claire joining the PC (even if it’s just for show) will affect the other group members? With Claire in the picture, will the dynamic be thrown?
LFG (Let’s F-ing Gossip)!

I started a Pinterest board to try to add everything called out in the book outfit wise, lmk if you want to be a collaborator
1. I think at first when Massie approaches Claire with the idea to pretend to be friends, she doesn't actually see them becoming friends. After the party is when things start to shift. Alicia's starting to drift away from Massie, which I think leads Massie into forming a friendship with Claire. Overall though, considering how Massie acted towards Claire at the beginning of novel, it didn't seem like she wanted to make peace or have a friendship with her. It was entirely about getting a boy/girl party.
2. I don't think Claire cares that much about getting a cell phone, especially considering she had a cell phone that Alicia gave her (which she ended up giving back.) I feel like she wants to be friends with Massie and have a Briarwood crush the most. For Claire being friends with Massie means fitting in with everybody, but she also wants a crush since the girls in Westchester are incredibly mean.
3. I feel like the dynamic of the PC was thrown off the entire second book by several things. First, Kristen and Dylan both having a crush leads to a big divide in the group. The Halloween party definitely made things worse because Alicia befriended Olivia which upset Massie. I feel like the rest of the drama relates to Derrington. Dylan and Kristen both like him, but he's also flirting with Alicia (also it seems like he's just using Massie's friends to get closer to her.) I feel like Claire didn't disrupt the dynamic too much because things were already so tense within the PC.
