Welcome back to Book Club, GLU’s! We’re wrapping up Best Friends for Never with some serious crush chaos and trust issues.
Dylan and Kristen both like Derrington, Derrington likes Massie, Claire likes Cam, Cam likes Claire, Massie likes Cam, and Alicia has gone AWOL with Olivia Ryan. We need yarn, a bulletin board, photos, and a beautiful mind to keep track of everything.
On top of it all, as a result of the “Dirty Devils” scandalous Halloween costumes, OCD is enforcing uniforms… effective IMMEDIATELY. Massie is panicked, considering that this entire mess is her fault. The good news: the administration has agreed to an OCD Uniform Design Contest and Fashion Show. The bad news: Alicia is teaming up with Olivia Ryan instead of the Pretty Committee.
Guh-ASP!
The fashion show was fab! Massie, a brander before branding was a brand, put a purple dot of nail polish on her voting thimble and dropped it in the Pretty Committee team box. The good news: the PC has ah-lot of thimbles. The shocking news: Alicia and Olivia had more, which means they won.
But did they?
After some sore-loser sleuthing, Massie discovered her purple-polished thimble in A & O’s box, proving that Alicia and Olivia switched the box! Looks like Massie needs to up her dose of beta-blockers!

Claire and Massie are finally getting along. Does Massie see her as Alicia’s replacement? Do we trust this relationship?
Massie is undoubtedly planning a vicious revenge on Alicia after royally screwing the Pretty Committee over with this cheating stunt. Is Massie more hurt, or vengeful? Will she ever be able to trust Alicia again? Would YOU?

1) I agree with Rose - Olivia was the perfect "beta" because she was so willing to follow Alicia. Even though Faux was gorgeous and got a lot of attention from boys and the other girls at OCD, at the end of the day she just wanted to follow along with whatever Alicia said, which gave Leesh a taste of what being an alpha is like. And in the next book, we know she wants more than a taste and goes for her own full clique!
2) I feel like Massie didn't see Claire as Alicia's direct replacement, but she knew the influence she could have over Claire and was using her to fill the Alicia-shaped hole in her heart. I do think that Claire and Alicia are similar in the sense that they both are willing to stand up to Massie at times, but will just as quickly shrink away and come back after testing their limits. It's like they want to be defiant and prove a point, but it never lasts.
3) I think that Massie tries so hard to mask any feelings of sadness/disappointment by being vengeful and thinking up her next master plan to get back. I do think she was hurt and confused by Alicia's actions, but then very quickly decided to not wallow in those feelings and seek revenge.
I’ve always wondered something. Supposing that a hypothetical second Clique movie that adapted this book,coming out say in late 2009 or early 2010,and supposing that Olivia hadn’t just been cut (maybe replaced with Alicia?), who might’ve portrayed her? I was tentatively thinking AnnaSophia Robb or someone like her,but I’d appreciate the commentariat’s thoughts on this!
