1) I agree with Rose - Olivia was the perfect "beta" because she was so willing to follow Alicia. Even though Faux was gorgeous and got a lot of attention from boys and the other girls at OCD, at the end of the day she just wanted to follow along with whatever Alicia said, which gave Leesh a taste of what being an alpha is like. And in the next book, we know she wants more than a taste and goes for her own full clique!

2) I feel like Massie didn't see Claire as Alicia's direct replacement, but she knew the influence she could have over Claire and was using her to fill the Alicia-shaped hole in her heart. I do think that Claire and Alicia are similar in the sense that they both are willing to stand up to Massie at times, but will just as quickly shrink away and come back after testing their limits. It's like they want to be defiant and prove a point, but it never lasts.

3) I think that Massie tries so hard to mask any feelings of sadness/disappointment by being vengeful and thinking up her next master plan to get back. I do think she was hurt and confused by Alicia's actions, but then very quickly decided to not wallow in those feelings and seek revenge.

Yes. To add to point 3, it takes more vulnerability to work through beings and and disappointed. It’s easier for Massie to be vengeful. What does she do best? Make others jealous and feel small. If she can do that maybe she can get Alicia back (or at least regret her decision) rather than having a conversation about how she makes the girls feel.

I’ve always wondered something. Supposing that a hypothetical second Clique movie that adapted this book, coming out say in late 2009 or early 2010,and supposing that Olivia hadn’t just been cut (maybe replaced with Alicia?), who might’ve portrayed her? I was tentatively thinking AnnaSophia Robb or someone like her,but I’d appreciate the commentariat’s thoughts on this!

1. I think Alicia is also more interested in hanging out with boys, and she's more confident in herself bc she has experience with boys. While Massie does have the Boy/Girl party, it felt like something she had to do in order to maintain her popularity. Olivia also is way more willing to follow Alicia, which I think is why Alicia wants to be friends with her. No one in the PC has ever treated her like an alpha, so I think she likes Olivia for that reason.

2. I think Massie does see Claire as a replacement for Alicia. Having a beta has always been an important part of TPC, and I think Claire is assuming that role. I do think Claire and Alicia are too different, so I think the replacement won't work out. While, Claire's a very loyal and genuine friend, Massie has more in common w Alicia.

3. I think Massie is genuinely hurt by Alicia's betrayal. Alicia was her best friend, her beta, and she ultimately betrayed her. Massie says in this book that if TPC ever fell apart, she would slip. Losing Alicia even if she does have a replacement definitely still hurts. I think Massie will be able to trust Alicia again, and personally I would too. If someone's your best friend, I think it's easy to forgive them.

Claire is a perfect beta because Dylan and Kristen already have defined roles. Claire is the new girl and instead of changing the other girls she can kinda mold her from scratch. In another way she is also more honest with Claire so she can probably get better advice with her too when she seeks it.
